Crushed egg shells are now on my anti aging list of things to do. If you are in the habit of throwing away your shells, now you can use them for all sorts of great reasons.
The best reason of all, the shells of an egg are a great source of minerals and some amino acids.
There is not a lot of studies on egg shells. However, I don’t need studies to know if something is working for me or not. I am one of those people who will try anything and everything if I think it is good for me.
A study by the Dutch on post menopausal women found an improvement in bone density in the hip area. After supplementing with an egg shell powder for 1 year. This is good news if you suffer from hip problems.
Another study on the shells of Turtles suffering from ‘soft shell syndrome‘ found supplementing with egg shells hardened the Turtle’s outer shell.
Eating crushed egg shells gives the body a natural source of calcium. And is the perfect replacement for calcium supplements, in fact, the shells are 95% calcium carbonate.
If you are perimenopause or menopausal you will definitely benefit from the calcium of an egg shell.
Ok, for those of you, like me, who just want to get down to the good stuff, and couldn’t care less about research, graphs, and illustrations. Let’s get started.
Crushed Egg Shells
How I began my journey into crushed egg shells. I was searching the Internet for a way to remineralise and regenerate my teeth as I had chipped a tooth. I came across the shells of an egg as a way of helping improve the health of teeth and gums.
Ever since I have included an egg shell a day. Because the composition of the shell is very similar to that of our teeth and bones. And I am convinced including a shell a day helped heal my chipped tooth.
First of all, it doesn’t have to be the egg of a chicken, it can be a goose or duck egg.
All up there are 27 elements in a shell. It is a great source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, sodium, silicon, cobalt, boron, copper, manganese and zinc.
Amino acids cysteine, lysine, and methionine.
Did you know, if we don’t get enough calcium in our body it will pull what it needs from our teeth and bones?
Eating crushed egg shells is often recommended as a way to help those who suffer from osteoporosis.
Because a shell contains calcium carbonate it will also apparently help relieve heartburn, an upset stomach, and acid ingestion.
Include this wonderful natural form of calcium to help reduce joint pain. You can also add a small amount to your dog’s meal to help with any arthritic problems.
How To Make Egg Shell Powder
Always use Organic Free Range Eggs.
I boil the egg shell aggressively for 5 minutes. I have read on a couple of sites advising to just wash the eggs. Although, I don’t think this is a good idea, bringing the water to a boil and simmering is a better option for proper cleaning and removing any bacteria.
If a sunny morning, air dry in the sun, if not, I put in the oven and dry at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or 60 degrees Celsius just until they are dry. Could be 10 minutes or a little longer.
Depending on how many egg shells I have, if only one, I will just break up into small pieces and put into a banana smoothie.
More than one shell I will blend in a coffee grinder to make a fine powder. When making enough for a few days. I put into a glass jar and keep in the fridge.
Add a teaspoon of crushed egg shells powder to cereal, soups, juice, sprinkle over pasta dishes or pizza, add to a smoothie, whatever you like really.
Sometimes I will boil a few eggs, then the shells are already cleaned. I peel the egg shell off and place in the oven to dry. And I have a boiled egg to snack on when I am feeling peckish.
You can buy eggshell powder. I really would think twice before spending my money on something I can easily do myself, without the plastic packaging.
One teaspoon of egg shell powder will give you around 8,000 to 1,000mg of calcium.
Make Your Own Egg Shell Face Mask And Toothpaste
There really is no need to be searching around for the best face mask. It is already sitting in your kitchen. Grab some of your ready crushed egg shells powder and add a small amount to an egg white and smear it all over your face and neck.
Relax for a few min until you feel it dry and rinse off with warm water. Your skin will feel as smooth as a baby’s bum and look beautiful.
Make your own toothpaste.
I mix a small amount of shell powder mix with some organic coconut oil and a small amount of activated charcoal. It makes the best toothpaste and your teeth and gums will be forever healthy. The activated charcoal will help to keep them white.
It is so easy to make and takes no time at all. Once you get in the habit of making your own crushed egg shells powder, you will never consider buying this in supplement form.
