It is usually common for people to get nail fungus in their big toes. However, I got it first in the fingernail of my middle finger. Which to this day has never looked the same?
It can spread very easily, and the worst part, I had the fungus for over 5 years! Yes, that’s right, 5 years. This nail problem can hang around for a long time and some people can have it even longer.
Through the journey, I felt I was always trying to hide my nails. It was embarrassing and I struggled with my sense of well-being and happiness. This doesn’t mean you will be in the same boat as me, my fungus was very severe. Once I finally found a cure for nail fungus and cleared it up completely, I felt fabulous.
Stress is what brought on this condition for me. Other ways you can get this nail problem is constantly wearing fake nails. A weak immune system, lots of swimming in indoor pools. Diabetes, over 40 years of age, wearing closed shoes constantly like runners, causing trauma to a nail.
Some people are just more prone to nail fungus than others. It also runs in families, if your mother or father had it, chances are you will too.
It doesn’t matter how you get it, once you have it, it’s a real pain trying to find a cure for nail fungus. The only way you can get rid of it is to allow the nail to grow out, it will not clear up on its own.
The nail has to grow out, and you treat the nail as a new nail is growing. Once the new nail has grown, it still doesn’t mean you are in the clear, continue to treat the nail to prevent the fungus coming back.
There is no quick and fast way for nail fungus to heal.
Don’t be fooled by some of the products available. They are quite expensive and you will end up buying the product a few times, as you wait for the new nail to grow.
Cure For Nail Fungus
Be careful of the type of treatment you use. It is something you are treating over a long time, not a short time.
For me, I found tea tree oil and vinegar not only cheaper to use but non-invasive.
Before I settled on these two home remedies for fungus, I tried everything else imaginable.
I ended up at the Doctor’s and he prescribed an oral antifungal drug called terbinafine (Lamisil). The drug is expensive and from what I can remember, I had to take one a day.
After I did some research on terbinafine and other antifungal drugs, I didn’t even finish the course. This was not the cure for nail fungus I wanted. There are serious side effects and long-term health problems with this type of fungus treatment.
Oral antifungal prescription medication can have a serious effect on the liver and kidneys. Before your Doctor prescribes this type of treatment, it is best he takes a blood test first. To check your body is up for it!
I ordered Zeta Clear online, after a couple of months stopped, as this stuff also costs a lot. There was not even the slightest change in the 3 to 4 months I used it. You need to order enough to last you 6 months or more.
Other brands I tried were Daktarin tincture, Canesten Antifungal cream, and Loceryl Nail Lacquer Kit.
Home Remedies For Fungus
Finding a cure for nail fungus is time-consuming and frustrating. There are plenty of home remedies suggested, Vicks is one of many I tried without success.
Bleach is another one often specified as a cure, I never tried this one. If you are going to use it, be careful!
I also tried coconut oil and prepared a paste made with baking soda. I found these home remedies for a fungus cure very messy.
The only thing I can claim helped me was tea tree oil, it’s not expensive, has no side effects and it was easy to use. I had a bottle in the car, my handbag, in the bathroom, by my bed, I was never without the stuff.
Tea tree oil has antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal properties and it dries in seconds, this was my cure for nail fungus. I put it on my nails morning, noon and night.
Other natural oils you can use are; jojoba oil, oregano oil, and lavender oil also considered natural fungicides.
When I had the time, I would soak my nails for around 20 min in white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. I did this for about a year.
If the fungus is all the way down your nail to the Lunula (half-moon) area, then it will take longer for it to grow out with the new nail. It is easily treated when it starts from the tip of the nail.
Toenails take longer to grow than fingernails, you need a lot of patience.
Don’t put nail polish on your nails. Nails must always be kept clean and dry and change your shoes daily.
Cure For Nail Fungus Through Diet
Treat the inside of your body too.
This is extremely important, especially if you have been ill or stressed out like I was and your immune system is not as strong as it could be.
Olive leaf extract is good for helping strengthen the immune system and giving your body a detox.
Drinking herbal teas make great home remedies for nail fungus.
Drink a couple of cups of Camomile tea a day, this will help slow bacterial infection. When finished with the tea bag, put it on your infected nails for a few minutes.
You can do the same with Lemongrass tea, drink 2 to 3 cups a day and then place the used tea bag on your nails for a few minutes.
Drink Garlic tea, cut up a few slices of garlic, put in a pot. Add water, bring to the boil, simmer for a few minutes, the longer it simmers the better. Drink 2 to 3 cups a day. You can soak a cotton ball in the tea and place it on your nails too.
Include lots of water.
It is all about being consistent when finding and using a cure for nail fungus.
