What is it about goji benefits, also known as wolfberry, that captures the attention of health-conscious people?
Are these little dried berries really an amazing superfood, able to slow down aging?
I have to admit, I had fallen into the trap of believing these berries, could do amazing things for my health.
There are so many foods nowadays pushed as a superfood, perhaps too many.
As for goji health benefits being a superfood? Well according to the lack of studies on this, and from my personal experience, I would say not.
You will find this berry sold everywhere from the local supermarket, online and health food shops.
Goji benefits can also be found in snack bars, cereals, and many other health products. With the overload of superfoods, sometimes too much of a good thing can actually cause unwanted health problems.
And I certainly wouldn’t buy any of these berries if they come from China! Even if the packet says organic, China as far as I know does not have certified organic practices.
Another thing to consider, before you go sprinting out the door to go buy some. The dried goji berry industry is poorly regulated which is why there are so many health claims being made.
And be aware of where you are buying your berries from. Many brands can have little black spots and mold spots on them.
The US Food and Drug Administration is now monitoring the goji industry for many of the health claims made.
It doesn’t only come in the dried berry form you can enjoy goji benefits as a juice.
Goji Benefits Health Claims
The many health claims these berries can do for you are nothing short of amazing.
They can apparently suppress your appetite and control food cravings.
Lower blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, strengthen the immune system, promote healthy liver and kidney, improve eyesight and the best one of all prevent cancer.
The second best one of all prevents stretch marks.
Goji benefits can supposedly improve blood circulation, improve memory, ease tightness in the joints, treat male infertility, restore sexual desire, and improve the health of hair, skin, and nails.
Of course, we can’t leave out hair, skin, and nails, because this is the one every woman wants and this one sells.
Dried goji apparently offer a lot of nutritional value, by eating a small amount each day.
Eating more than the recommended amount may cause diarrhea. I guess if you suffer from constipation, then here is your answer!
May also interfere with blood thinners, like warfarin.
Some people have experienced minor symptoms of digestive problems when first eating the berries.
Goji Juice Benefits
When I first heard about the goji benefits offered in a juice, I couldn’t wait to buy some, I bought 2 dozen bottles. To me, this berry was the answer for good health and slowing down the aging process.
Mind you, pure goji juice is not cheap, a 1L bottle is around $30 and you need to drink at least 1/2 cup a day for your body to acquire the health benefits.
According to one website I found, drinking the juice can not only improve your health, it can increase your general wellbeing, therefore making you happier.
These findings are due to a ‘Industry Sponsored Clinical Trial’ published in the ‘Journal of Complementary Medicine’.
I’m pretty sure you have this journal somewhere in the house!
Goji juice benefits are often marketed for reducing the signs of cellulite.
I can’t imagine how much of this stuff you would have to drink before you noticed your cellulite gone.
I drank the juice for weeks and didn’t notice any difference to the way I was feeling and my cellulite certainly didn’t go away.
Therefore, I have concluded, if you already have a healthy diet, not one particular juice is going to make much of a difference to your cellulite or sense of well-being that’s for sure.
Unless you like to drink a lot of alcohol, then I can guarantee you will be feeling pretty good, until you wake in the morning.
Dried Goji Health Benefits
Yes, the dried goji berry is really quite amazing. You can see why everybody wants to eat them, and this is without any proof!
How about some before and after shots, you know the ones. A woman stands there looking all frumpy and in the next one she looks healthy, happy and has an amazing body.
All because she enjoys goji benefits every day.
They contain more vitamin C than oranges, Vitamin E, essential fatty acids, betaine (a nutrient that plays an important role in the health of the cardiovascular system).
Wait there’s even more!
B Complex vitamins, more iron than a piece of steak, more beta carotene than carrots.
Dried goji berry has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial compounds and a good source of chromium (a mineral that aids in blood sugar control).
This mineral helps promote an efficient metabolism and prevent weight gain.
Weight Loss With Goji Benefits
Being of mature age, I can easily gain weight around my hips and stomach. Eating a few berries every day did little to help in this area.
I mean really unless you’re exercising, eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of fluids. How can a little berry help if you are not doing anything else to help yourself?
Another important fact about the goji benefits health claims. Is the amount of scientific evidence to prove eating or drinking goji juice can give you all the health benefits so many say it can.
Well, I couldn’t find much evidence of that, except for a few studies on mice.
Apart from liking the taste of the berry and the juice I might add is delicious. I am not really sure it is something you need to add to an anti aging regimen.
Dried goji berries cost anywhere from $8 online to $15.00. This adds up quickly if you buy the berries regularly.
If you still insist on buying some, buy organic. But remember, not from China.
It is a good idea you try for yourself, this is only my opinion. You may have some success from goji health benefits.
You can also buy goji berry supplement in capsule or tincture.
We all want to believe so much, we are eating or drinking something that is going to help make us stronger, healthier, look younger and live longer.
I did along the way find this great article from the Sydney Morning Herald Blog. It is not only very humorous, it makes so much sense.
I even came across a website touting goji health benefits for dogs, cats, and birds. I mean really!
Goji nutrition has actually been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years and is a shrub found in Northern China.
Maybe the best way to include the nutritional value of goji berry is to visit a Chinese Herbalist.
Yes, while the jury is still out on the goji benefits, I stop buying!
